Service was less than average and could not change order due to dietary restriction. They should make cleaning tables a priority to limit wait times. The only place to get authentic Finnish food.

Great prices, lovely service and a historical landmark. The only down fall, the steep stairs that lead to the restaurant. Food tasty and filling!

One of Thunder Bay's finest historical landmarks and the most vital piece of Finnish history in the city. Everyone knows the Hoito and it's famous for a reason, even if it isn't what it used to be in the public's rose tinted memory. The breakfast is underwhelming to me, I'm not personally a fan of the pancakes. However the mojakka is great and the piirakkas are big, buttery and delicious. You can get pretty great lunch here if you look for something besides the pancakes on the menu. The atmosphere is fine for a restaurant that is located in a big basement. The service ranges from friendly to, less than friendly, but I haven't had a bad experience here. I like the place not only for it's history but for it's good lunch food.

Great food and service and the prices are awesome

Great place to have breakfast in a very historic building.

Hoito came highly recommend and we really wanted to like it but something was off. Hours later I am still trying to get the porky pancake stuffing taste out of my mouth. Kind of expensive too.

Really yummy with generous portions. Do t be in a rush. Hoitos is almost always busy, so service is not speedy. The Finnish Canadian is fantastic and big enough to share between two people.

Terrible service unless you have a lot of time to wait for foo even when they are not busy . Mediocre food. The waitresses there would make excellent ex-wives.

Food was excellent. I had the Sovereign Pancake, yum. Service was slow (new employee) but they were friendly and more than made up for it.

I love this place so much. And the food, well iv been to, over 60 different places around the world, and this is the best place for breakfast. I just love how they put bacon between the fin pancakes. The dish is called.... the finnish Canadian

once we got to the Canadian border we asked the border patrol officer what we need to do while in thunder bay. he immediately said “fincakes at the Hoito†we had no idea what he meant but we went anyways 😂. the food was outstanding and they had amazing service. it took quite awhile to be seated but it was well worth the wait :)

Food and service was great. However after more than 5 minutes I thought my eardrums were about to rupture. Management should set in place a noise level policy.

Used to be 5 starts for me. Prices are up and the counter is gone. Lots of new upsell items on the menu. Still the best most delicious pancakes and delicious sausage. Ask for real maple syrup.

World famous breakfast spot located in the heart of the Bay Street district. The best Finnish pancakes on the planet served in tons of different ways. The lunch menu is simple and also has a great assortment of foods from burgers n fries to fish head soup. Excellent customer service with free coffee refills offered on a regular basis. Average cost for breakfast is about $9 per oerson. Highly recommend!

horrible service that takes forever I’m not sure why this place has such good reviews the food is bland and flavourless Tina’s breakfast makes better pancakes with whip cream and fruit for cheaper the menu is boring with food you can make at home for way cheaper

What a great spot for food I got the sovereign pancake which comes stuffed with pork belly and the mojakka, finnish beef soup. The pancakes was so good I like these Finnish pancakes better than classic ones and pork belly just added to it. The soup was also very tasty. Great meal.

The best finnish pancakes I've ever had! Great service and location.

Ok food, pretty bad service. I'm sure this was great at one point in history, but certainly no longer.

This place has awesome Finnish Pancakes!!!! Delicious.... The portions are really big and the food we had was all good and hot! Lots of traditional Finnish food. Lots of fish. Photos on the wall are amazing pieces of history and the story of this building.

They recently have added a ton of new items that are Vegan and Vegetarian. The Vegan turkey and Bacon club was amazing! It tasted soooo great! I will be going more often now since they have so many new and yummy items!

The hoito is a signature restaurant in Thunder Bay that everyone should visit at least once. That being said, it has significantly declined in quality over the years and every time I’ve been in the last few months I’ve slowly noticed that it is not what it used to be. The pancakes are no longer the signature hoito pancake, they are no longer unique or special. Their other menu items are not bad but they aren’t particularly good. It’s an average restaurant and is okay but not at all what it used to be.

At first when I entered this place I was kind of like, this looks like a high school cafeteria. But at 100 years old this year, it's a Thunder Bay institution (according to my buddy who lived here for years). I had special Finnish french toast with a Finnish yogurt and was extremely happy. The food was simple and fresh and so good. Everyone I was here with thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

We ordered the new special they had....it was great! We also loved hearing about the history of the resturant and specialty items!

The service was good. But the food was cold when we got it. And so was the coffee and tea. I am very surprised because there usually is no problem.

A fantastic little family friendly restaurant hidden away in the basement. You may have to wait a bit for a table but the food is totally worth. They have a variety of food to choose from but make sure you try their special Finnish pancakes. Worth going out of your way to visit.

It's tough giving a 100 year landmark the raspberry but some improvement is greatly needed.Food product is marginal at best, service is non existent, and the wait for food is mind numbing. We ordered two standard breakfast offerings, with Finnish pancake, eggs, sausage, bacon, and ham.The sausage links were unedible low quality, the bacon was cold and soggy and the ham resembled a slice of round processed mystery meat. This sad state of this restaurant screams for competent management. Until then, pass on anything with the implication of meat or deli.

Not as.good as it was but always a safe bet.

Very tasty food. Nice staff. 100 year old restaurant! I had the 'Sovereign Pancake' which was a pork belly stuff pancake, awesome. Meaty. We also had the Piirakka (sp) with egg salad. Egg salad and a different kind of pancake. Very good!!
Kimber Ethier
The food and service was AWESOME as always.

I had a great brunch here! The staff is friendly and very nice. The restaurant itself is super cozy and feels like home, and the food is amazing. I had the eggs Benedict and I loved it! I also tried the rice pudding but I didn’t get any extra syrup on it. It was still pretty good but I’d imagine it would be way better with strawberry or blueberry syrup. I’d definitely go here again and take all my friends!

Must-try restaurant in Thunder Bay, nay, in Canada! The Finnish pancake is unlike any other pancake or crêpe. It is truly delicious. Try the plain one with butter before you put anything on it so you can taste the pancake. Viili yogurt is made in the restaurant. It's really healthy, authentic yogurt; try with the blueberry sauce. If you want to try the Finnish cuisine, order the Suomi Tasting Plate. It comes with rosolli salad, pickled herring, and salt-cured salmon. It's a new taste for most North Americans; worth trying. Highly, highly recommended.

My husband and I went here while we are in Thunder Bay on the recommendation of a gf. We were a little hesitant as we had read very mixed reviews online. We went in and werent greeted at all but when our server approached us she was friendly, the coffee was kept full and the wait for our food was minimal....exactly opposite of what I had read online. The building itself is very cute with the restaurant in the lower level (Watch the step down from the door..its a doozy!) Very spacious, almost church basement feel but light and cheeryFood was good, nothing to write home about but good. Would recommend!

Not my personal preference as far as atmosphere goes. Very communal hall style feel and sorta non personal service. Waiter was polite though. Food was very good for sure. Wouldnt recommend trying the Finnish dishes unless you are familiar with them but the breakfast and lunch were great.Biggest thing that killed the rating was the service though! Very slow overall.

Many people recommended Hoito to me and it lived up to the hype.Wonderful, good price, tasty, nice atmosphere, great staff.A must try for anyone visiting.
